October 1999

PASC/SEC SD10

Author: Andrew Josey, PASC Functional Chair Interpretations

Abstract:

Interpretations are being processed for the following PASC standards (many of which are POSIX® standards): 1003.1, 1003.2, 1003.1b/1003.1i, 1003.1c, 1003.5, 1224, 1224.1, 1224.2, 1387.2 and 2000.1. The interpretations mailing lists are hosted on the pasc.org server.

Active participation is encouraged by all interested parties in order to make this work. This status is updated quarterly. This document also details the electronic submission process for PASC interpretations.

Table of Contents

1. Introduction

The IEEE Project Interpretation Committees conduct their business via electronic mail, and the IEEE sponsors the PASC-related mailing lists on the PASC web server (http://www.pasc.org). This has several advantages:

1.1 Instructions for using PASC Mailing Lists

The PASC sponsors several mailing lists for various groups within the standards community. The lists are maintained by IDI Inc. All messages sent via these lists have sequence numbers provided in the Subject line, and are archived on pasc.org by those sequence numbers. List participants may request copies of past messages from the list administrator.

If you have questions about the PASC mailing service, please send them to Shane McCarron (s.mccarron@pasc.org).

2. Distribution of PASC Interpretations

3. Electronic Submission Process

Where possible, PASC Interpretations requests should be sent electronically. A web form is available as a front end for submitting requests in the correct format (see http://www.pasc.org/interps/interpform.html).

The web-input method sends a formatted electronic mail message containing the interpretation to the request to the official mail alias that has been established at the IEEE to facilitate this process.

stds-pasc-interp-request@ieee.org

The process works as follows:

  • The interpretations requestor should submit a request using the web input form at http://www.pasc.org/interps/interpform.html, which then sends on the request to stds-pasc-interp-request@ieee.org.
  • The IEEE Staff Contact (on stds-pasc-interp-request) will acknowledge receipt of the request to the requestor, with a cc of this acknowledgment to the PASC FC/Int.
  • When the PASC FC/Int has assigned a number to the interpretation, he or she should ensure that the IEEE Staff Contact is informed of the number, and will also inform the requestor of the assigned number.
  • The PASC FC/Int then uses the electronic copy to send to the appropriate interpretations committee.
  • The Committee works as usual. Sends completed interpretation to PASC FC/Int.
  • The PASC FC/Int sends final interpretation to requestor, with cc's to the IEEE officers. The PASC FC/Int includes a note to the requestor asking for their acknowledgment of receipt of this email, with a request to cc that acknowledgment to the IEEE Staff Contact as well.

    5. Resolution Process

The emphasis for submitting and resolving interpretations is now being focussed onto electronic methods. The procedures being followed are in the document entitled PASC/WG15 POSIX Interpretations Process secn434r3.pdf by Jim Isaak. An alternate guide to the process is also available at http://www.pasc.org/interps/pascint-guide.html.

PDF viewer software is available from ftp://ftp.rdg.opengroup.org/pub/PDF/.
