This project will specify a set of interfaces to allow portable access to underlying fault management services by application programs. These underlying services may support detection, logging and notification of abnormal conditions during system operation; classification and analysis of abnormal conditions for fault diagnosis; and corrective actions for system reconfiguration, reinitialization, and recovery. We have just completed our first draft of logging and notification , and we are working together with the real-time group on a trace interface. We have on the current agenda a proposal for reconfiguration which we will begin at the April 1995 meeting.

P1003.5 - Ada Binding for System API

This completed project produced IEEE Std 1003.5-1992, which is the core Ada POSIX API, corresponding to IEEE Std. 1003.1. It is dur for a reaffirmation ballot in 1997.

P1003.5b - Amendment 1: Realtime Extensions

This completed project produced IEEE STD 1003.5-1996, which amends IEEE STD 1003.5-1992 to provide Ada interfaces for the functionality of IEEE STD 1003.1b and IEEE STD 1003.1c. The contact person for prepublication technical editing of this document is the P1003.5b Technical Editor.

P1003.9 Fortran

PASC 1003.9 developed the Fortran language binding to 1003.1-1990. This IEEE Std 1003.9 is/contains/standardizes:

These conventions could easily be applied to future POSIX standards as well as for a vendor's non-POSIX calls. For example, they could be used to access vendor system structures, constants, etc. or structures, constants, etc. in new C-language based POSIX standards.

P1003.5c - Amendment 2: Protocol Independent Interfaces

This project is working on an amendment to IEEE STD 1003.5, to provide Ada interfaces for the functionality defined by P1003.1g, the Sockets and XTI interfaces. There is a working draft that has been through one Mock Ballot.

P1003.24 - Ada Binding to X Window System - Modular Toolkit Environment

This project is working on an amendment to IEEE STD 1003.5, to provide an Ada95 binding to Motif 2.0. This binding will include bindings to some X11R6 types and to the X11R6 toolkit to the extent required for Motif. Custom widgets will be excluded from the scope of the standard. The purpose of this standard is to provide a standard for Ada95 similar to IEEE STD 1295: 1993 based on today's advanced technologies. It is expected that the drafting work will be performed primarily in Europe.

1003.0 Guide to POSIX based Open System Architectures

Mailing List: pasc-pr This group is developing a guide document which describes an open system environment. The document details a reference model and provides guidance on how to use POSIX standards and other standards and specifications identified by the group as being necessary for an open system environment, particularly in the development of profiles.

1003.10, .15 WG on Supercomputing AEPs and Batch

The P1003.10 Supercomputing Working Group is chartered to:
  • Write a POSIX Application Environment Profile for users, administrators, and implementors of high performance systems,
  • Identify areas needing to be standardized in the high performance computing environments, and
  • Work with other groups to standardize those areas. The Supercomputing Profile is in ballot. Working Group sponsored Resource Limits and Checkpoint/Restart are in the P1003.1a ballot, and the Removable Media Study Group is progressing.

The P1003.15 Working Group has written a command level interface Batch Standard (P1003.2d) that has completed IEEE ballot and is now undergoing ISO synchronization prior to being submitted as a standard. The Working Group meets with and works closely with the projects of P1003.10 and is chartered with Batch related POSIX activity.

1003.13 POSIX Real Time Environment Profile

    See 1003.1b.

1003.14, .18 POSIX Platform Environment Profile

his working group is developing the Multi-Processing Application Environment Profile (AEP) standard for POSIX. The current draft (Draft 9) has not changed for some time while waiting for various base standards to complete. Draft 10 will go to ballot this fall.

The .14 working group has also submitted changes to the .1 working group (which are in P1003.1a, now in ballot) and new interfaces to the .4 working group (new synchronization functions which in the current .4d draft.)

This working group is also completing the development of P1003.18, a core profile consisting of ISO/IEC 9945-1, IEEE Std 1003.2, their interactions, and language bindings. Draft 10 of this profile is about to go out for its first re-ballot. This project was previously assigned to P1003.1.

1003.23 Guide for Developing User Open System Environment Profiles

The purpose of the project is to describe a process for developing user Open System Environment (OSE) profiles, as opposed to standardized profiles. The guide will include a framework for documenting user requirements, the information technology services that support those requirements, and a means for identifying the standards, specifications, and interim solutions that will provide the required services. The guide will also address the need for a transition plan for large systems and issues to consider when implementing User Organization OSE profiles, such as conformance testing of User OSE profiles.

    2003R Test Methods

2003R is a project to revise the current standard: 1003.3- 1991 Test Methods for Measuring Conformance to POSIX. It will expand to include profiles and LIS and hopefully improve the original by adding more examples and improving the structure of assertions. It is about to produce draft 5 which is intended to go to ballot this fall.

    2003.1b - 1003.1b, .1c, .1d Test Methods

2003.1b is something of a special case. It covers test methods for the last draft of 1003.4 (not 1003.1b which includes more tha just a renumbered 1003.4) are being written under contract from a US government agency, and will be submitted to us for review and balloting following the normal IEEE process. This standard is currently in ballot.

    Mailing List: pasc-ds

    Project Contacts for Completed Work

    1224.1, 1326.1, 1327.1, 1328.1 Messaging Services

The P1224 working group completed the standardization of two sets of APIs in early 1993. The first set is an object management API specification, the second set is an X.400 API specification. Both sets include a language independent specification, test methods for the language independent specification, a c language binding, and test methods for the c language binding. The APIs are based on the X.400 API Association and X/OPEN APIs. A third set of APIs, which is an X.500 API, was standardized at the same time as the object management and X.400 APIs. All three sets of standards have been submitted to ISO for fasttrack standardization.

    1224.2, 1326.2, 1327.2, 1328.2 Directory Services

The P1003.17 Name Space and Directory Services group was conceived in 1989 to solve two distinct but related problems for POSIX, i.e. to define a global name space for POSIX systems and specify an API to directory services based on but not limited to the ITU X.500 series.

The group completed work on the directory services API standard which was based on the X/Open XDS specification. Four specifications were produced and were subsequently published as IEEE Standards 1224.2, 1326.2, 1327.2 and 1328.2 in February 1994. This series of standards define an API to directory services in a language independent manner and provide a C language binding and associated test methods for each. There is an active interpretations committee for IEEE 1224.2 et al.

Work on POSIX name space was not progressed beyond the study phase due to lack of industry consensus and the lack of a related document upon which the work could be based.

    1003.21 Realtime Distributed System Communications

This group is developing a language-independent specification (LIS) and an Ada language binding for interprocess communication in the realtime distributed systems domain. The group is addressing realtime needs in the following areas: protocol management, endpoint management, connection management, unicast data transfer, multicast data transfer, multicast group management, transaction services, event and error management, and performance monitoring. The interface will also provide support for heterogeneous data transfer, priorities, and synchronous and asynchronous interactions. Similar to 1003.1g, the interface is written in a protocol-independent manner with mappings provided to existing protocols. The LIS will include a formal specification of the API written in Z.
